R score and medicine: reading thresholds without false promises

A historical threshold is never a guarantee

When medicine in Québec comes up, numbers spread fast: roughly 33.5 to 34.5 at Université Laval, around 34.2 at Université de Montréal, 34.8 at McGill and about 33.5 at the Université de Sherbrooke. These values are observed or reported benchmarks, not contractual thresholds. Universities can change how the file is weighted, the number of seats, the applicant categories and the selection steps. A score that led to an interview one year may not produce the same result the next. The right reflex is to check each faculty's official admissions pages before deciding where to apply.

The R score is often just a first door. An applicant may also need to pass a structured interview, present a specific background or meet precise prerequisites. McGill, for example, should not be mechanically compared to a francophone university without checking the applicant's category and the current process. So use the figures as a planning range. Never call them "the official minimum R score" unless the university itself uses that expression for the cohort in question.

Why half a point can mean a lot of work

Near the most competitive files, a 0.5 gap can move an application among a large number of people. That half-point does not automatically equal a year of study, though. The effect depends on the units already accumulated, the new courses and their weighting. The more units your file contains, the more strong new results you need to move the weighted average. The simulator helps observe a hypothetical course, but the cégep remains the source of your file's official result.

File tip: Note the number of units for each course and ask your guidance service how failures, retakes and upgrading courses are treated in your real file.

Group strength changes the context

Students sometimes cite strength indicators of 2.6 to 3.0 in some very strong groups at colleges like Vanier or Dawson, versus 1.8 to 2.2 in other regional contexts. These examples are not a permanent ranking of cégeps: the indicator belongs to a group and a cohort, not to the whole institution forever. In a simplified scenario, an IFG gap of 0.8 adds four points to the formula because the indicator is multiplied by five. But the IDG and the other parameters matter too; isolating a single number can lead to a misleading comparison.

Three strategies stronger than threshold obsession

The best decision is not always the one that maximizes a single number. The program, the environment, mental health, costs and the ability to sustain the effort all count. Compare the published criteria, talk to a counsellor and keep a dated copy of the requirements you consulted. CalculQuébec helps you understand the mechanics; it does not predict admission and does not replace a faculty's assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Does an R score of 34 guarantee an interview?

No. The cohort, the applicant category and the other criteria can change the outcome.

Does a cégep always give a better IFG?

No. Indicators describe groups and cohorts; they are not a fixed grade awarded to the cégep.

Does the calculator give my official R score?

No. It is an educational simulation. The official result comes from institutional processing.
